El Camino de Santiago 2004

Some of you have asked me about some reading material. Here are some suggestions and comments.

The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago: The Complete Cultural Handbook by David M. Gitlitz and Linda Kay Davidson, 2000, St. Martin’s Press
I think of these authors like the American grandparents of the Camino. They were some of the first people to take American students on the Camino. At least one of their students has gone on to write a doctoral dissertation about the Camino. One can easily get information overload from this exhaustingly complete book. Without a doubt, it has made its way into the canon of contemporary Camino literature.

Off The Road: A Modern-Day Walk Down the Pilgrim’s Route into Spain by Jack Hitt, 1994, Simon & Schuster (out of print)
This is a lighter read than the previous book. I haven't read the entire book, but Mike has been working his way through it. The author is a great writer, but I found the author's awe about things that strike me as average things sometimes too much. I think that is more due to the fact that I lived in Spain, though. Nonetheless, this would be a great coffee shop read.

El Camino: Walking El Santiago de Compostela by Lee Hoinacki Penn State Press is my last suggestion.
This book is like a journal with generous heaping of history interspersed throughout his experience. This has a very different tone than Jack Hitt's work, it’s more serious and historical. His background as a former Dominican priest, prof. of political science and subsistence farmer is ever present in his work. His scholarly experience definitely shapes his writing style and his work also shows a level introspection that is absent in most other Camino diaries. But his judgmental and holier than thou attitude drive me mad at times.

Hey guys, As you can see, a lot of things are coming together (notice our new peeps list here on the right). I would like to add a blurb about each person along with a picture. So could you do me a favor, send me a short blurb about why you want to do the camino, what you are looking forward to, or something interesting about you.
saludos,
annie

I'll look into whether I can drive on Fri.

Also, I was wondering if anyone would be up for a Friday afternoon backpacked-stroll? I work Sat. mornings and usually can't make it. For the truly ambitious, I was thinking of a trek out to Dexter for a visit to The Cookie Momster, the most charming cookie shop in the continental US. Let me know if anyone's interested.

Ouch - we're hurting in the wheels department. I just sent out email asking who can do some driving. Right now we now we can 10 people (there are 16 of us).

  Hello friends,
just wondering-
how's the ride situation working out for this friday? I have a car no longer.
till then,
pat

Way to go Deborah! She's on board.

Reminder: Don't forget to bring athletic clothing for our rock climbing this Friday and 15 dolares for those who ordered t-shirts. Trust me, these shirts are rather "gordo" as the kids say these days (back in my day they were "rad, dude"). Whatever you decide to call them, you are going to be the envy of all your friends with such a cool t-shirt.

O.K. Anditos is "en la casa" and muy listo para empezar. This blog is going to ROCK!

howdy all! The coundown is on! By my count, exactly four more weeks. Andy and I are getting the last minute things organized. I am starting to get excited.
I don't know how familiar you guys are with using a blog, but you should get an invitation to join. I hope you all do. Feel free to use this as a place to ask questions, write down comments, anything. Once we are on the camino, we will try to keep this blog up as a sort of communal diary so that all of our friends and parents can follow our adventures. See you all friday at the climbing gym!
Saludos,
Annie
